Karen Digital Mentorship Program

In response to identified needs and following engagement with community members and service providers (Karen Digital Engagement Report(PDF, 289KB) ), Hobsons Bay UP Youth Services and MiCare have developed community workshops and a digital mentorship program for community members in Laverton with Karen background.

Digital Mentorship Program

The Karen Digital Mentorship Program is for young people and adults of Karen background to learn how to get online using a laptop. Young people will be partnered up with an adult and become their guide to using technology. This co-designed program will see young people develop leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Participating adults will have hands-on training for using digital technology with the support of their young mentor, a bi-cultural worker, an IT facilitator and a Hobsons Bay UP supervisor.

This mentoring program is due to start on Monday 12 July and run for 6 weeks at Laverton Community Hub from 4.30pm to 5.30pm weekly. Light refreshments will be provided.

Mentoring program topics:

Week 1: Introduction – device setup, identifying icons, and connecting to Wi-Fi

Week 2: Selecting data and device plans

Week 3: Using search engines and introduction to applications

Week 4: Internet banking, MyGov, and Compass

Week 5: Social media and video calling

Week 6: eSafety and troubleshooting – review of all areas
