COVID Recovery Youth Work Placement - Expression of Interest

Are you a young person in Hobsons Bay looking for work? Council is offering a series of work placements to 15-25-year-olds in a range of services as part of our COVID Response Package for Youth Employment.

Through the support package, Council is aiming to increase young people’s job readiness and skills, as well as create meaningful work experience throughout our organisation.

From hands-on placement opportunities to learn in the field alongside our city services team; to bespoke office-based project opportunities embedded within various community services, sport and recreation, arts, culture and heritage; (just to name a few!) young people are sure to find a unique opportunity at Council to help further their career with a rewarding and tailored experience.

Successful applicants will benefit through:

  • a meaningful work placement opportunity in a local government setting
  • dedicated coaching, advice and support from an in-house youth worker
  • receiving support and guidance from a direct supervisor
  • complementary career education sessions
  • gaining skills that can be used in a variety of industries
  • creating social and professional networks with other participants
  • gaining workplace confidence and satisfaction helping the community
  • assistance with out-of-pocket expenses. While the placements are unpaid, an allowance of up to $600 will be provided to cover expenses such as travel, food, work attire etc

Council is committed to help young people recover from the COVID pandemic – many of whom were impacted by unemployment through several prolonged lockdowns. The unemployment rate of young people aged 15-24 in Melbourne’s west reached a peak of 35.6 per cent in November 2020, almost double the rate experienced across Greater Melbourne (19.3 per cent). To be eligible to apply for the COVID Recovery Youth Work Placement program, you must:

  • be of working age, 15 to 25 years of age
  • live in Hobsons Bay
  • complete an expression of interest form (below)
  • have availability to complete a three-week, full-time placement taking place in the summer holidays or in subsequent rounds in 2022 (subject to area of interest and available matches at Council)
