Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre
The Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre is a vibrant community facility. The purpose built Joel Gallery has housed many wonderful exhibitions showcasing local talent and artists’ work from across Melbourne and Victoria. The centre is owned and managed by a community based, owned and administered cooperative the Hobsons Bay Community Advancement Cooperative.
Situated in the heart of Altona on the site of the old Altona Hospital, Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre was established after the close of the hospital in 1996. The centre opened its doors in November 2005 and is a community owned and managed meeting place. Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre and Joel Gallery are the trading names of our governing body, the Hobsons Bay Community Advancement Co-operative, a volunteer Board of Management. The centre and the gallery provide a program that offers community wellbeing, arts and cultural services to the residents of Hobsons Bay and the wider western suburbs. Everyone is welcome to the space and invited to support new and emerging artists, not-for-profit groups and ideas for creative community participation.
