News>2009 Volunteer Awards Winners Announced
| The Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Peter Hemphill announced the five winners of the 2009 Hobsons Bay Volunteer Awards at an awards ceremony on 24th September at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre.
The awards are held as part of Councillor Hemphill’s Mayoral program and recognise individuals, organisations and groups that have made Hobsons Bay a better place thanks to their voluntary contributions.
The 2009 Volunteer Award winners are: Arts and Cultural Activities: Winner: Kerin Botha, Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre. Kerin has been volunteering up to 30 hours per week for the past 3.5 years at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, working in support administration, coordinating U3A programs, and as a member of the gallery and events committee for the ‘It’s Art, Wear It’ exhibition. Kerin has been responsible for all of the paperwork and administration relating to the fashion parade and textile items for ‘It’s Art, Wear It’.
Special commendation: Heather Grimmett, Williamstown Minstrels.
Community Strengthening: Winner: Rebecca Biddle, New Zealand Maori Polynesian Welfare Support Group Inc. Rebecca Biddle has established a variety of support programs for the Maori and Polynesian communities in Hobsons Bay. These include youth at risk, dealing with cultural identity, care for the elderly, Maori culture groups and helping families deal with the loss of loved ones.
Rebecca has also been involved in organising the Victorian Maori Festival, the Bayside and Williamstown Festivals, Harmony Day, a Maori pre-school program at the Altona North Community Centre, and an alcohol and drug support program.
Rebecca has been a member of the committee of management at the Migrant Resource Centre, Altona North since 2003; a member of the Altona North Police and Community Consultative Committee for 10 years; and works as a manager/field worker for the New Zealand Maori Polynesian Welfare Support Group Inc.
Special commendation: Barbara Irving, bushfire support and community volunteer.
Environment, sustainability and conservation: Winner: Ann Link, Friends of Greenwich Bay Inc. Ann Link has worked tirelessly for the last 12 years to organise and promote the activities and philosophies of the Friends of Greenwich Bay Inc.
In addition to coordinating regular revegetation activities for the group, she has initiated involvement in the annual Clean Up Australia Day and National Tree Day events.
Ann also helped to form the ‘Enviro Friends’ group, which has been a forum for all of Hobsons Bay’s friends groups to meet on a quarterly basis to share knowledge, network and support each other’s endeavours.
Sport and Recreation: Winner: Rodney Davies, Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club. Rodney Davies has been the curator of the Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club since 1990, a committee member since 1983, and the President for 10 years.
Rodney’s work to run the club and prepare the playing surface has been invaluable to the club. Playing numbers and standards have increased significantly and the junior program was re-established under Rodney’s leadership.
Rodney took the club into the Victorian Turf Cricket Association and has helped to develop the club into one of Hobsons Bay’s most successful.
Special commendation: Valda ‘Nan’ Collie, Laverton Cricket Club.
Excellence in Volunteer Engagement: Winner: Royal Yacht Club of Victoria – Volunteer Program. The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) has a volunteer program which involves volunteers assisting in the provision of services, direction and management of the club, committee function and participation and support to sailing and social activities.
Over 100 volunteers assisted with running the Flying Fifteen World Championships held in January 2009. Sailors from around the world competed in this regatta.
The Flying Fifteen World Championships required volunteers to set up sites, measure boats, boat registration, volunteer registration, crane and tractor drivers, events and tourist information, photography, fuel support, sponsor liaison and data recording.
In addition to volunteering during regattas, there are eight sub-committees which are run solely by volunteers. The sub-committees deal with membership, the yard and marina, sailing, house and social events, development of the club, sponsorship and marketing, women’s sailing and fundraising.
