Carbon Neutral

Carbon Neutral by 2020
The Council takes the threat of climate change seriously and in November 2007 committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations to zero net by 2020 and to help the community reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero net by 2030.

The key actions the Council is undertaking to reduce its own energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are:

Adopted the Greenhouse Action Plan 2008-2013 [PDF 258KB] which provides the framework for the Council to become carbon neutral in its own operations by 2020 and to assist our community to be carbon neutral by 2030
Installed energy efficient lighting at Commonwealth Reserve and committed to installing energy efficient streetlighting across the municipality to reduce energy use from public lighting by 50 per cent by 2013
Retrofitting the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre and other Council owned buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in existing buildings by an average of 25 per cent by 2013
Installed solar electricity (photovoltaics) at the Altona Library
Installed solar hot water at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre
Retrofitting the Seabrook Community Centre to improve the environmental performance of the building
Assisting the community to reach zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 through education and information, providing various opportunities for participation and engagement and assisting with access to energy efficient equipment and infrastructure.
The Green Kinders program includes an energy management guidebook [PDF 1.17 MB] training course and series of professional energy audits and retrofits to kindergartens and child care centres operating within Council owned buildings.
