The Volition project links together community groups and organisations with businesses in Hobsons Bay. Community groups can gain access to skills and resources while businesses can raise their profile and allow employees to engage locally.

Email Literacy Program

Students from the Visy Cares Link Centre at their computers

During the final term of the school year, students attending the Visy Cares Link Centre have been corresponding to volunteer employees at Qenos via email.

The aim of the project is to increase the students' literacy skills, and it is always much more enjoyable when the writing is done on the computers.

Business Integration Benefits Many…

Residents at the Half Moon Caravan Park with the spare clothing and merchandise

AMES (Adult Multicultural Education Services) students, residents of the Half Moon Caravan park and people accessing programs from Gateway Social Support Options were the beneficiaries when trucking and logistics company CRT Group and Golden Bros integrated to operate under one brand name.

Corporate clothing and merchandise with an old logo were gratefully received by the three groups.


Floyd Lodge Community Garden

The sales team from Novo Nordisk creating garden beds in the Floyd Lodge Housing estate community garden

The western sales team from Novo Nordisk braved wind and rain to create garden beds in the Floyd Lodge Housing estate community garden in Williamstown.

ISIS Primary Care was successful in receiving funding to establish a community garden at the Floyd Lodge Housing Estate in Williamstown for its residents, many of whom are elderly and socially isolated.

Kindergarten Receives a Spring Clean

Members of the the Lions Club of Altona Meadows who assisted the Eastona Park Kindergarten with a working bee

Thank you to the Lions Club of Altona Meadows who assisted the Eastona Park Kindergarten with a working bee to give the centre a spring clean.

The Lions club meet regularly at the Karingal Golf Club in Altona and meetings often feature guest speakers. It is a great opportunity to meet people and get involved in your local community. For more information contact Tony Weldon on tel: 0447 774 743.

AMES students at the Owens Illinois factory in Newport

Students enrolled at an AMES class in Footscray recently enjoyed a tour of the Owens Illinois factory in Newport.

The company's stringent approach to Occupational Health and Safety was just one of the learning opportunities for the group.

New Brochure for Community Centre

Jo at ZuZuPetals, design and printing helps Leanne from Altona Meadows Community Centre with the brochure redesign

Joanne Tyers of ZuZuPetals Creations, a design and printing company, thought it made good business sense to assist the Altona Meadows Community Centre with the design of their term brochure.

It provided her with an opportunity to advertise her business on the finished product! 


Laverton College F1 Team Break Victorian Record

The High Speed Cheetahs

Five students from Laverton Secondary College from years 8 and 9 won the state championships in the Schools Innovation Design Challenge in October. The competiton is an initiative of the Re-engineering Australian Forum LTD (REA) a not for profit public company established to raise awareness of engineering and our future innovators.

Self named team The High Speed Cheetahs beat schools from all over the state in the professional junior section. The team went on to represent Victoria at the national competition held at The Australian Defense Force Academy and Parliament House, Canberra from 24th-27th November.

Opportunities to Get Involved

Budgeting Skills Required

South Kingsville Community Centre is currently looking for a volunteer with experience in setting up a budget using Quickbooks Premier. This would likely be less than a full day’s work and could probably be done via email.

The centre provides a range of educational and recreational programs and resources that are responsive to the needs of the community and enhances social well-being.


Men's Shed

Cultural Diversity Week Volunteer Opportunities

To celebrate Cultural Diversity Week, 15th-21st March 2009, there will be a number of volunteer opportunities to work on projects with groups of newly arrived migrants and refugees. More details will follow in the next newsletter.


Workplace Big Day Out

Sula has a go at Tai Chi at Melbourne's 2008 Workplace Big Day Out

Would you like to involve your employees in a workplace volunteering program? Not sure where to start? The Workplace Big Day Out introduces employees to volunteering in the community in a supported and fun environment.

Next year's event will be held on 12th May at the Altona Sports Centre. Employees can register individually or as a team.
