Act Local - Sustainability in Action

Pete, outside the Oasis Cafe in Williamstown

Doing business sustainably: Pete at the Oasis Café in Nelson Place, Williamstown believes that his business should operate at as little cost to the environment and with as much benefit to humanity as possible.

Pete's been doing what he can to reduce his environmental footprint. His ongoing environmental improvement has so far seen him transfer all of his electricity to 100 per cent green energy and is using Gigante organic and free trade coffee.

What Can You Do?

Worms

Worm farming: 40 per cent of the waste that ends up in landfill in Hobsons Bay is food waste. Worm farming is a great way to reduce your environmental impact and at the same time produce some great soil for your garden and pot plants.

Sending organic waste to the tip creates about five and a half times more greenhouse gas than composting or worm forming. So why not start your own worm farm? Find out where you can buy a worm farm or how to make one yourself.

What is the Council Doing?

Going Carbon Neutral: Solving climate change has become one of the greatest challenges of our time. It’s going to require unprecidented cooperation and leadership. The Council has risen to the challenge and is playing its part in protecting our planet for future generations.

In November 2007, the Council made the commitment to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions to zero net by 2020 and to help the Hobsons Bay community to reduce its emissions to zero net by 2030.

Find out how we are going to cut our carbon emissions.
