Building permits

Building permits

The Building Act requires persons carrying out building work to obtain a building permit prior to the commencement of work.

Building permits are required for different types of buildings such as:

  • industrial and commercial projects
  • dwellings and dwelling additions
  • dwelling alterations
  • attached carports and verandahs
  • garages
  • timber and brick front fences

Under the building regulations there is some building work that is considered minor and does not require a building permit. You should always check with Council’s Building Department if you are unsure whether a building permit is required or not.

For further information on obtaining a building permit and its associated fee through Hobsons Bay City Council, please contact the building department on 9932 1000.
