Exhibitions
The Council’s exhibitions program includes a number of recurrent events such as Art In Public Places and Airtime. In addtion, the Council sponsors or co presents the Contemporary Art Prize and SUB12 with The Substation, and an annual midyear multicultural exhibition at the Joel Gallery at Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, among others.
Airtime is an ephemeral public art project that highlights the creative talents of young people in Hobsons Bay. Artworks are reproduced and printed on large flags and exhibited for approximately three months at a time on the flag poles located at the Queen Street Skate Park in Altona Meadows.
Each series of artworks will be curated under different themes.
Airtime is produced and managed by Hobsons Bay City Council through Arts and Culture.
Rotation Five: Saturday, 10th November 2012 to April 2013
This Airtime rotation celebrates Bayside P-12 College Literacy program and their involvement in National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2012.
Rotation Four: Saturday, 9th June 2012 to Sunday, 11th November 2012
This Airtime rotation celebrates the winners of the PIXEL8 photographic competition. PIXEL8 is a photographic project for young people who live, work or go to school in Hobsons Bay and are aged between 12 and 18 to give their impressions of living in Hobsons Bay with the themes of community harmony and wellbeing. PIXEL8 is held annually between February and May.
Rotation Three: Saturday, 26th November 2011 to February 2012
The young artists in this series participated in workshops to create mandalas using several techniques. The program was a great way for the artists to think about pattern and colour.
Rotation Two: Wednesday, 31st August to Wednesday, 16th November 2011
Street SmART was founded in 2008 and has been running free street art workshops with young people ever since. They have been able to offer some fantastic opportunities for young artists to be involved in large scale artworks and exhibitions.
Rotation One: Saturday, 9th April to Friday, 1st July 2011
The winning artworks were exhibited from the ‘Hello’ Laverton Art prize. The artworks were launched on Saturday, 9th April, 2011 which also coincided with National Youth Week 2011.
Art in Public Places
Art in Public Places is coordinated by Hobsons Bay City Council as a city wide event that exhibits the artwork of western region artists in businesses and various unique venues across Hobsons Bay.
Participation in Art in Public Places helps to promote businesses and artists in Hobsons Bay. Various marketing and media attention surrounds the project increasing the profile of participating businesses and artists.
The project aims to strengthen our community through building partnerships between artists and businesses in the local community.
Art in Public Places started in 2004 as part of the visual arts program of the Williamstown Summer Festival. In 2006 it was expanded across the city so artists and businesses throughout Hobsons Bay could participate.
The project is now managed by Hobsons Bay City Council and is a three times winner of the Australian Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) State award in the Toyota Community Category.
SInce the project has been running it has enabled over 500 artists to exhibit in businesses and various venues in Hobsons Bay.

Art in Public Places 2013 will run from 5th April to 5th May and now is the time for local artists and businesses to register their interest.
The program last year involved more than 50 artists exhibiting in 40 businesses and unexpected places across Hobsons Bay, as well as 20 art-inspired events for everyone to get involved in.

Toyota Community Spirit Gallery
Toyota Community Spirit Gallery is part of Toyota Community Spirit, Toyota’s corporate citizenship program which aims to share Toyota’s resources and expertise with the community. Opened in 2004, the gallery has shown over 850 artists focusing on local artists from the cities of Hobsons Bay and Port Phillip, but also including many from other areas in Victoria and interstate. There is no cost to exhibit, no commission charged on sales, and a colour catalogue and launch is provided for each exhibition. Exhibiting artists are also eligible to apply for the $10, 000 Toyota Community Spirit Artist Travel Award. For more information visit

Call for emerging artists
Toyota Community Spirit Gallery is calling for submissions from emerging artists to exhibit in our 2013 Emerging Artist exhibition.
Successful applicants are eligible to apply for the $10,000 Toyota Travel Award. A broad range of contemporary and traditional works across all mediums is sought from artists from diverse social and cultural backgrounds including artists with disability. The focus is on local artists from the cities of Port Phillip and Hobsons Bay but the program is also open to regional and interstate artists. There is no cost to exhibit and no commission charged on sales of work. Established in 2004, the Gallery runs a continuous program of exhibitions at Toyota’s corporate headquarters in Port Melbourne and has shown the works of over 850 artists.
