If you want to give your garden a bit of a lift, you can now remove seaweed from the Hobsons Bay foreshore without requiring a permit.
Every year thousands of tonnes of seaweed washes up on the shoreline and most of it is usually sent to landfill for disposal.
Seaweed has good fertilising properties and can be used as garden mulch or compost. Council therefore encourages residents to collect it for private use.
Please be safe when removing seaweed – it’s important to wear the right protective wear, such as gloves, in case any sharp objects have been washed in with the seaweed. It's a good idea to use a rake first to break apart the seaweed, and then use a shovel to load the seaweed into bags or a trailer.
There is a limit of 10 bag loads or a light trailer load, and the seaweed must be free of sand and any sea creatures.
