Join us at Williamstown Town Hall for the World Environment Day Community Festival on 3 June. The global theme for World Environment Day 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”, and we aim to go beyond recycling. This event will provide you with the tools and knowledge to make a positive change in our community.
The community festival will kick off with music from the Ukulele Dolls, followed by a speech from the Mayor. Donna Shiel from Victorian Litter Action Alliance (VLAA) will MC the event, with a keynote presentation from Altona resident and Professor Mark Osborn (Biosciences and Food Technology, RMIT University).
The following workshops and presentations will also be happening throughout the day:
2pm: Emma Dean (MasterChef winner)
2.45pm: Neil Blake (Baykeeper/Port Phillip EcoCentre)
3.30pm: Maria Ciavarella (My Green Garden)
Local Environmental Community Group Stalls
You’ll also be able to visit tables hosted by local community and council groups to find out what they’re already doing to Beat Plastic Pollution. Refer to the links below to find out which local Environmental Community Groups will have a stall at the event.
The kids will be entertained by the Trash Puppets, who will show them how to make their own fun puppets from recyclable materials. The Hobsons Bay Libraries Book Cubby will also be there, filled with children’s books relating to sustainability and the environment. And they’ll be able enjoy a free hot chocolate too!
Plastic Pollution Challenges
Plastic pollution is one of the great environmental challenges of our time. It places a heavy burden on waterways, marine life and our own health. This year’s theme is a call to action for communities to come together to combat the negative impacts of excessive plastic consumption, and find sustainable alternatives.
There will also be activities for the kids, with the Trash Puppets teaching them to make toys from recycled materials and a book cubby to read stories in. Both children and adults will receive complimentary hot drinks and snacks from the coffee cart, so don’t forget to bring your reusable cups!
