On Thursday 17 May, Hobsons Bay City Council will raise the rainbow flag at the Civic Centre to mark IDAHOBIT: International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia, which celebrates inclusion and acceptance for gender and sexuality diverse persons worldwide.
Co-Chair for Council’s Social Wellbeing and Community Services Portfolio Advisory Committee and Deputy Mayor Councillor Tony Briffa said the flag raising symbolises Council’s support for human rights and Council’s commitment to reducing barriers faced by LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and questioning) people in our communities.
“Publically showing our support and acknowledging IDAHOBIT is another step towards strengthening human rights for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or biological sex characteristics,” said Cr Briffa.
Cr Briffa said supporting inclusion, diversity and equal rights for the entire community has been a long-standing commitment of Council.
Co-Chair for Council’s Social Wellbeing and Community Services Portfolio Advisory Committee and Wetlands Ward Councillor Colleen Gates said Council resolved to support marriage equality in April 2012 and is committed to upholding the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 and Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
“As stated in our Gender Equity Statement, Council is committed to delivering on our vision of a vibrant community that celebrates diversity and provides opportunities for all.
“I encourage the community to join us for the IDAHOBIT flag raising ceremony and morning tea to show your commitment to creating a world free of discrimination,” said Cr Gates.
The IDAHOBIT flag raising ceremony will take place at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona at 11am followed by a morning tea. Victorian Senator Janet Rice will be in attendance to deliver a keynote speech. The community is invited to attend the event.
