Queen's Baton Relay
Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay
The Queen's Baton Relay, (similar to the Olympic Torch Relay) is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. The Baton carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, currently Queen Elizabeth II. The Relay traditionally begins at Buckingham Palace in London where the Queen entrusts the baton to the first batonbearer. At the Opening Ceremony of the Games, the final batonbearer hands the baton back to the Queen or her representative, who reads the message aloud to officially open the Games.
The baton arrives in Brisbane on Christmas Eve and travels around Australia before heading back to the Gold Coast for the Opening Ceremony.
On Saturday 10 February, the baton will be carried by 32 community members as it journeys through Williamstown and Altona. For the full list of batonbearers and further information visit www.gc2018.com/qbr.
Seeking Community Participation
Hobsons Bay City Council is inviting your organisation to participate in the excitement, as the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay comes to Hobsons Bay and visits the suburbs of Williamstown and Altona on its way to the Gold Coast.
We’re looking to really showcase our community organisations along the route of this unique event, and to welcome the baton bearers to our city. To do so, we’re seeking proposals from the community to participate by activating the route that the baton will take.
There are a variety of ways that your group can be present on the day; you could run a ‘come and try’ activity, schedule a training session, create an outdoor display or hold an open day. The event will provide a fantastic opportunity to highlight what your organisation offers the local community.
If you’d like to be involved then get in touch by Wednesday 1 November and we can discuss your ideas further:
