Over the years that the project has been running, it has enabled more than 800 artists to exhibit in businesses and various venues in Hobsons Bay and expanded to include numerous community events and organisations.
Art in Public Place s is about people getting to experience the arts in unexpected places and encourages the creation of partnerships between local artists, cultural groups and businesses right across the city.

Artists in Businesses
Are you a local artist looking to show your work? The Artists In Businesses program, matches excellent art with great local cafes, restaurants and retail shops across Hobsons Bay to give artists the chance to exhibit in a range of spaces to a broad new audience. The program, now in its 10th year, has been utilised by more than 800 artists so far as a way of showcasing their artwork throughout this area of Melbourne’s West. The experience, described by participating artists as “a good entry into the local art scene”* has led to further opportunities for some artists, as a way of selling works for others and as a first foray into exhibiting for many.
Participating artists will be assisted by Council through promotional and administration support, including:
- Inclusion in the Art In Public Places printed program – distributed to cafes, shops, restaurants, bars, community centres, libraries and local arts venues.
- Inclusion in Council’s Art In Public Places webpage with links through to artist’s own pages
- Feature post on Art In Public Places Facebook page with links through to artist’s own page
- One hundred (100) promotional postcards featuring the artist’s own work to use for promotion
- Administrative support in setting up the partnerships with local businesses
- Opportunities too to sell work from the businesses during the exhibition period
In addition to this promotion, the overall program will be heavily promoted in the lead up to Art In Public Places, giving art lovers plenty of opportunity to find out more about artists, their work and the locations of Artists In Businesses exhibitions.
This program is not just for painting and illustration, if you work in another media and are unsure if your work will suit an Art In Businesses context, please don’t hesitate to contact Hobsons Bay City Council’s Arts and Culture Officers on 9932 1000, email email@example.com or visit the Art in Public Places website and Facebook page.
The fee for artists participating in this program is $99 inc. GST

This year the major public art activations and events programed by Hobsons Bay City Council will feature as premier events. It’s anticipated there will be between five and seven premier events across the municipality. Premier events will feature prominently in the program and include various methods of community engagement in the development of the works. Keep an ear to the ground for opportunities to be involved, examples include the Blockumentary in Laverton or The Good News Bunting in South Kingsville and other places and Light up Logan in Altona.
Light up Logan
In 2015 we launched the inaugural Light up Logan event in Logan Reserve, Altona. To continue and grow this popular event we will be calling for expressions of interest for up to six lighting projects with an artist’s fee of $1,000 each to be installed in and around Logan Reserve, Altona. More information on this new opportunity will be available at the information session in November. For now, just start brainstorming your ideas.

Hello Neighbour offers opportunities for community-led projects to occupy various precincts in Hobsons Bay, this could include underpasses or temporary pop-ups. Three Hello Neighbour projects will be selected each with a $1,000 project fee. The selected projects will need to show that they have fully engaged with neighbours and the community and ideas must be creative-art and design-based and occur in public space.
Temporary Art interventions
A number of sites will be identified for temporary street-art projects. These will enable both young people in Hobsons Bay to develop ideas as well as include commissioned works by well known street artists.
If you are holding an arts-based event and would like it to be promoted under the Satellite Events section of the Art in Public Places website and promotional materials, we welcome your submissions. It will need to be within Hobsons Bay and open to the public to be included.
